Belly Fat Breakthrough

One huge issue with losing weight is how to target fat loss just in the belly region. This is a topic which has been getting a fair amount of attention in recent days.

I discussed the Flat Belly Diet For Men only a few weeks ago, and now Belly Fat Breakthrough, by registered dietitian, Karlene Karst,

Much of the buzz around this topic of losing belly fat, is the result of a 2009 research paper, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which demonstrated the benefits of safflower oil for reducing belly fat. Karlene goes into detail on this subject in chapter 8 of her book.

Basically, this research found that 2 teaspoons of high linoleic safflower oil enabled the women in the study to lose 2 to 4 pounds of belly fat. They also gained lean muscle mass, and had lower fasting blood sugar levels.

The safflower oil used in the study is, however, not readily available -- enter SafSlim -- a "unique patented form of emulsified safflower oil," now commercially available.

The final chapter of the book is very obviously promoting SafSlim, and I have since discovered that Karlene is affiliated with it. This isn't mentioned in the book, which irks me slightly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally against SafSlim, it's just that I feel transparency is always a good idea.

Anyway, that aside, I do feel the book offers some very valuable information.

Karlene talks about "belly-safe carbs." These are whole grains, beans, legumes, and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. She also empathizes that refined carbohydrates, like white sugar, white rice, and white pasta, need to be decreased.

The importance of fiber for curbing appetite and reducing absorption of calories is also highlighted. I assume this is based on research by the University of Kiel, Germany, which found that for every gram of fiber we eat, we eliminate 7 calories. That means,

If you are eating the recommended level of 25-38 grams of fiber, you can subtract 175-266 calories from your diet each day. This alone will help you lose 0.5 to 1 pound per week. (Direct quote from book)

The overall macronutrient content of the Belly Fat Breakthrough is 15-20% of calories from protein, 45-50% from fiber-rich carbohydrates, and no more than 25-30% from fat (with the focus on mono and polyunsaturated fats).

The benefits of having a regular exercise program are also highlighted, with emphasis on strength training. The book also includes a circuit training program, with easier versions for beginners, which is a nice touch.

As a whole, the advice contained in this book is pretty sound. I do feel, however, that specifically targeting "belly fat" is a bit hyped. Again, the scientific research is rather scant on diets which lead to loss of belly fat. I've no doubt you will lose belly fat on this diet, but perhaps more because you are restricting calories, making better food choices, and exercising regularly.

Studies Tie Heart Drugs to Diabetes and Breast Cancer

Two separate studies have linked the heart drugs Lipitor (used to treat high cholesterol) and Digoxin (prescribed to patients with heart failure or abnormal heart beats) to higher risk of diabetes and breast cancer, respectively.

According to the Lipitor website, people with diabetes are advised to consult their doctor before starting Lipitor (known generically as Atorvastatin). And in 2008, research implicated Digoxin (marketed as Lanoxin and Digitek) with increased risk of breast cancer.

The Lipitor study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, involved 3,800 diabetes-free adults who had a history of stroke or transient ischemic attacks ("mini" stroke).

In one five-year trial, when compared to placebo and after considering factors, like age, weight, and smoking, Atorvastatin was linked to a 37% higher risk of diabetes.

But in other five-year trials, such as comparing Lipitor to Zocor, or a higher dose of Atorvastatin to a lower dose of the drug, the risk was much smaller; 6.4% to 5.6% and 9% to 8%, respectively. Scientists say the reason for the increases is Lipitor's effect on the body's ability to regulate blood sugar.

For the Digoxin research, which appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, scientists in Denmark analyzed data on 100,000 women, ages 20 and older, who took Digoxin at some point during the 12-year study. Results showed the chance of developing breast cancer was highest in women taking Digoxin in the first five years of the study.

But after those five years, the risk dropped. However, the higher risk returned in people taking Digoxin after three or more years. Other drugs usually given in combination with Digoxin were not associated with breast cancer risk.

Researchers from both studies reiterate the importance of talking to your doctor before beginning a new drug regimen.

You either love her, or hate her, but Jillian Michaels is one of the most recognizable faces on TV and the internet right now -- a pretty impressive feat, considering she is a fitness trainer, and didn't start out as an actor, or some random celebrity.

Personally, I like her tough, no nonsense approach to getting people into shape. I think it's necessary for some people. And, in terms of fitness, she gets results with what she recommends.

So, what is her book, Making The Cut, all about?

This book is intended for people who are already reasonably fit and doing some sort of physical activity, who have perhaps 20 pounds or less to lose. Jillian says this,

Let's be clear: Making The Cut isn't about losing 100 pounds; it's about tightening up, getting strong, and changing your body composition. You'll be shedding fat and building lean, strong muscle in its place. You'll be developing a drop-dead, smokin'-hot body.
The basis of this diet, is that people are either fast oxidizers, balanced oxidizers, or slow oxidizers. Apparently slow oxidizers need more carbs. Fast oxidizers need higher percentages of protein. And, balanced oxidizers are somewhere in the middle.

The book then provides three sets of different menus and recipes to fit with each of these types of people.

There are over 100 exercises described in the book, and most of them don't need any exercise equipment, since they focus on body weight. The exercise requirement is at least 40 minutes a day, 5 times per week.

Some of the exercise suggestions, however, don't show any pictures, which can make preforming a move difficult, if it's new to you.

What I like most about Jillian is that she encourages people to get up and take control of their lives. We need motivational people like her in the forefront of the media these days.

Unfortunately, the book offers no scientific evidence whatsoever to back up the dietary advice. Indeed, the science behind this oxidizer theory has not been firmly established, which is probably why!

My guess is that people lose weight on this diet because they are cutting calories and exercising 5 times per week, rather than because of some fancy theory about oxidizing.

That said, however, you can't argue the fact that Jillian Michaels knows exactly how to get people into the best shape of their life, and many of the reviews about this book are brimming over about how effective it is.

High-Protein, Low-Carb Diets Linked to Colon Cancer Compound

People following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet may be at higher risk of colon cancer, says a new study, due to changes in the colon.

High-protein, "low-carb" diets advocate eating foods heavy in saturated fat like bacon, eggs, red meat, and dairy, but avoiding high-carbohydrate foods, such as bread, pasta, grains, and fruit.

This is in stark contrast to traditional diet advice, which recommends eating fewer animal products and more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

For the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers put 17 obese men on three-short term diets.

The first diet was a one week plan that allowed 360 grams of carbohydrates each day and included foods like eggs and toast for breakfast; a sandwich and salad for lunch; and pasta with fish or soy for dinner.

Diet number two, a four week plan, allowed a meager 22 grams of carbs per day; bacon and eggs for breakfast; lunch and dinner consisted of meals high in meat, poultry, fish, and some cheese and vegetables.

The last diet, a "moderate-carbohydrate" diet, allowed only 181 grams of carbs each day for four weeks; both high-protein diets totaled less than 140 grams of protein every day.

After each diet, scientist collected fecal samples from the men and analyzed levels of specific metabolic byproducts; finding when eating a high-protein diet, men had higher levels of N-nitroso, and other compounds linked to cancer. Additionally, samples showed lower levels of compounds that help reduce the risk of cancer.

However, the scientists aren't sure how these results will affect a person's long-term health, but suggest being cautious before adopting any diet that is so low in dietary fiber. Meat does not contain fiber. Health experts recommend adults consume 28 grams of fiber per day.

Low-carb diets climbed to fame in 1972 when Dr. Robert Atkins published Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution promoting the consumption of high-fat foods for weight-loss and challenging the low-fat approach.

Since then, many other books have been written advocating more meat for better health, claiming human ancestors were primarily hunters and consumed mostly meat. But this opinion remains controversial and not widely accepted.

Salt Lovers May Curb Hypertension With Exercise

salt-exercise-hypertension.jpgThere's some good news for salt lovers! According to some new research, people who exercise are less likely to have their blood pressure elevated by a high sodium diet.

A diet high in salt has been widely accepted as one of the leading factors contributing to hypertension, but this new research shows that some "salt sensitive" people may have found a loop hole.

The research was conducted by Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans who studied a group of people in Northern China consisting of around 1900 men and women with an average age of 38. None of the participants were on hypertension medication.

During the the first week of the study the participants were given a diet that delivered 3000mg of sodium daily. The next week they were all given a diet consisting of 18,000mg of sodium a day. Everyone's blood pressure was measured 9 times each week and the participants were asked a series of questions to determine their exercise level. Those that had a 5% increase in systolic blood pressure when switched to the high sodium diet were labeled as "highly salt sensitive".

The results showed that the people who were the most active had a 38% less risk of being highly salt sensitive than the least active group. Participants in the next highest activity group had a 17% lower risk and those in the next to least activity group had a 10% lower risk. The researchers concluded that those who exercised significantly reduced their risk of developing high blood pressure due to salt sensitivity. The researchers noted that while this study's results are promising, they need to be repeated and peer reviewed.

While this study is good news for all of the salt lovers out there, caution should be used before using the study as justification to consume more sodium. It's important to note that even those that exercised were still at risk, since exercise only reduced the risk by 38%.

People who exercise should still have their blood pressure checked regularly and adjust their sodium intake accordingly.

Recently the Atkinites and the Dukamaniacs have been going head to head on which low carb, high protein diet is the most effective in fighting the battle of the bulge. In case you're lost as too what those terms mean, here are the definitions.
Atkinite- A zealot of Robert Atkins' dieting philosophies.
Dukamaniac- A zealot of Pierre Dukan's dieting philosophies.

In a nutshell, The Atkins' Diet promotes a low carb, high protein diet in which the dieter can choose just about any food source to meet the dietary guidelines. Even processed food including Atkins' own line of bars, shakes, and snacks as well as the use of grains to satisfy the carbohydrate allotment is acceptable.

On the other hand, The Dukan Diet promotes a low carb, high protein diet that is more similar to an ancestral type diet. There are 100 food items for the dieter to choose from, with 72 from animal sources and 28 from plant sources. In addition, some days the dieter would eat nothing but protein while on the plan.

The Dukan Diet, which started in France, is exploding in popularity across Europe and now is gaining popularity in the USA with its upcoming official release on April 19, 2011.

What We Learn From The Very Hungry Caterpillar

One of the most beloved children's stories of all time has a good lesson when it comes to moderation.

Over 40 years, 12 million copies and 20 languages later, Eric Carl's classic "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," continues to impact culture, and its underlying messages are now being promoted to help combat childhood obesity.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is teaming up with the Pearson Foundation and We Give Books. The AAP will be distributing copies of the book to more than 17,000 pediatricians' offices.

The book will come packaged with growth charts and a reading guide designed to help parents use the story to talk to their young children about healthy eating.

If you were deprived of a complete childhood aren't familiar with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, here's a brief synopsis...

Caterpillar comes out of his egg. He's hungry. Day one, he eats through a red apple. On day two, 2 green pears. On day three, 3 purple plums, on day four, 4 strawberries, on day five, 5 oranges. Nothing wrong there. But then, our little caterpillar goes completely off the rails, crushing chocolate cake, ice cream, a pickle, cheese, salami, a lollipop, sausage, a cupcake, a cherry pie and a watermelon.

(That night, he wished he had finished his gluttonous episode with a bottle of Tums)

To make a short story even shorter, he gets really fat, eats through a leaf, builds a cocoon and turns into a beautiful butterfly.

I think it's a wonderful idea on many levels. Any health-promoting idea that can be integrated into children's pop culture is a good step. And, while I don't see this single idea having much impact, I think from a more global perspective, it provides a parental teaching opportunity.

As parents, we should seek out teaching opportunities in books, TV, movies and everyday life, to get our children thinking about decisions that impact their health.

I think it comes down to role-modelling and education from a parenting perspective. The more institutions, school/government, etc. that are on board with promoting healthy eating and exercise, the better equipped we will be to fight childhood obesity.

Billionaire Determined To Live To 125

One of the perks of extreme wealth is being called "eccentric" when you are bat guano crazy.

Enter 87-year-old real estate mogul, and the majority shareholder of fruit giant Dole, David Murdock - who turned his private obsession of strict eating into an institution.

He hopes his preoccupation will cut him a deal with father time and help him hit the century-and-a-quarter mark.

The robust octogenarian has funded a research campus in Kannapolis, N.C., on which he has spent $500 million to study his certainty that plants hold the promise of optimal health and maximal life span.

Murdock's health obsession was brought to light recently when he awoke one morning in a state of disbelief and borderline panic... He had a sore throat. Says Murdoch;

I never have anything go wrong... Never have a backache. Never have a headache. Never have anything else.... I went back in my mind: What am I not eating enough of?

It's not fruits and vegetables - he crams as many as 20 of them into the smoothies he drinks two to three times a day. Probably not protein - he eats plenty of seafood, egg whites, beans and nuts to compensate for his avoidance of dairy, red meat and poultry, which are consigned to a list of forbidden foods that also includes alcohol, sugar and salt.

To be able to boast of such impeccable health at any adult age is impressive, but to have never experienced the aforementioned at the age of 87 is nothing short of remarkable.

Murdock's obsession was borne out of tragedy when his third wife, Gabriele, was stricken with advanced ovarian cancer. A diagnosis that would take her life.

Murdock became a man on fire, doing tireless research on nutrition, as he was convinced his wife's demise was lifestyle-related, and that he could have prevented it had they adopted this way of eating sooner.

Murdock's personal passion extends into his business as well. At Dole's headquarters in Westlake Village, CA, employees eat in a subsidized cafeteria, where salad is plentiful and chicken nuggets unthinkable. And, they have free access to a company gym where personal training, also subsidized, is $30 an hour.

A long life is something most people desire (even if it means many of us will have to see bell bottoms in style for a third time). But a) how long can one extend their lives through a strict, healthy lifestyle, and b) are those extra years worth that kind of deprivation?

As for Murdock, he comes across as a man who became obsessed when stricken by tragedy. In all likelihood Murdock will not reach his goal of 125 years.

One thing's for sure, though, genetics certainly hold the trump card when it comes to longevity, although I believe we have some say as to how long we live. Adding years to your life through a healthy lifestyle is no guarantee, but adding LIFE to your YEARS is.

Poll: Did a Vegan Diet Kill The Baby?

vegan-diet-baby.jpgAn interesting court case in France is underway where parents, Sergine and Joel Le Moaligou, are being charged with the death of their 11 month old baby due to neglect and food deprivation.

The baby was fed a vegan diet and the doctor involved said the death was due to pneumonia and vitamin deficiency. He refused to issue the couple a burial permit and reported them to the French authorities in 2008.

The parents became vegan in the year 2000 after watching an anti-meat documentary and only fed their baby her mother's breast milk and vegetables since birth. They also had never bathed their baby with water, but instead cleansed her with earth and clay. The baby only weighed 13 pounds at death and the parents were reported to earlier trying to treat their daughter's bronchitis with natural remedies instead of taking her to a doctor.

This is such a bizarre and sad case and I doubt it was really a vegan diet that killed the baby so much as really stupid parenting. What do you think? Participate in the poll and comments below.

How Losing Weight Made This Couple Better Parents

There are lots of reasons to change your diet if you are overweight, but for Neil and Caroline Bowers, it was their two little sons who finally motivated them to change.

Their story really highlights how crippling being overweight can be in all areas of life. But, with the right diet, mindset and a motivating factor, great things can be achieved.

Neil and Caroline wanted to become the best parents they could. And, together they lost more than 9 stone (57kg) between them -- an amazing achievement, which has totally transformed their family life.

I wanted to be the kind of dad who could run and kick a football around, not one who struggled to even get out of a chair and had to watch from the sidelines. Without doubt, the best thing about losing weight is that's who I've become. We love going for family walks and playing with the children - now it's them saying they're tired not us.

Does Dieting Make You Angry And Stressed?

The idea of reaching for a stick of celery when all you really want is a big slice of chocolate cake, would probably make most people a little grumpy.

And, according to results published in the Journal of Consumer Research, exerting self-control while dieting can in fact make people feel angry and irritable.

Research has shown that exerting self-control makes people more likely to behave aggressively toward others, and people on diets are known to be irritable and quick to anger. Source

The researchers set up four experiments to compare the attitudes of volunteers who were on a diet, with those who ate what they wanted. They found that:

Participants who choose an apple over a bar of chocolate were more likely to choose movies which had angry, revenge-filled plots. Those who choose a gift certificate for groceries rather than one for a spa service, showed more interest in looking at angry faces as opposed to more fearful ones.And, in an other experiment, people who chose a healthy snack instead of a less healthy one were more irritated by a public service advert promoting exercise.

Interestingly, the researchers have linked these feelings of irritation, stress, and anger to the act of exerting self-control while dieting, rather than the "dieting" itself.

The researchers point out that public policy makers should be more aware of the potential negative emotions, which can result when the public are encouraged to exert more self control over their daily choices.

Music and Laughter Help Lower Blood Pressure

A funny joke or listening to music may help lower your blood pressure, says a new study, maybe as much as losing weight or cutting salt from your diet.

The results were modest, but the reductions in blood pressure were associated with a 5% to 15% lower risk of dying from heart disease.

In the United States, one out of three people have high blood pressure, and one in five people have undiagnosed blood pressure; according to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Presented on Friday at the American Heart Association meeting in Atlanta, Japanese researchers reported that people who attended bimonthly group sessions involving music and laughter lowered their systolic blood pressure by an average of five to six points at the end of three months. The people involved in the study where 90 men and women, ages 40 to 74.

A control group, who did not receive music or laughter therapy, had no change in either blood pressure reading. Systolic blood pressure is the top number. Diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number.

Experts compared the effects on blood pressure on someone consuming less salt, taking blood pressure medication, or losing ten pounds. But music and laughter is not enough to treat blood pressure.

Previous research has shown that upbeat music improved the inner lining of blood vessels, allowing them to expand by 30%. Also, the release of nitric oxide may help lower blood pressure. Nitric oxide (nitrogen monoxide) is a signaling molecule in the human body and other mammals.

Risk factors for high blood pressure include obesity, lack of exercise, family history, and over-consumption of salt (sodium).

U.S. Bans Japanese Food Due to Radiation

As damaged nuclear reactors in Japan continue to spiral out of control and concerns over contaminated food rise, the United States has now banned some food imports from Japan.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the edict on Wednesday, after Japanese officials found radiation in crops grown near the effected reactors. The FDA does not want contaminated food to enter the U.S. food supply.

Last week, Japan feared that radioactive materials released into the air, following the earthquake that damaged nuclear reactors, would contaminate local food crops. Japanese health experts warned that this radiation could increase the risk of certain cancers, such as leukemia, and bone and thyroid cancer.

So the FDA has stopped all imports of dairy products and fruits and vegetables coming from stricken areas of Japan. Also, Japanese seafood will undergo radiation screening before it can be sold.

But according to the FDA, food from Japan accounts for less than 4% of U.S. food imports. For example, sushi restaurants in New York do not import a lot of fresh produce from Japan.

While restaurants have not experienced shortages in supplies, because many ingredients are grown in the U.S., other products, such rice and nori wraps, may soon be imported from places like South Korea.

And Japan faces another challenge. Testing shows tap water in Tokyo contains levels of radioactive iodine double the safe-limit for infants. Radioactive particles are carried by moisture droplets in the air. Health officials announced it is not safe for parents in Tokyo to give their babies tap water.

So far, Japan has banned the sale of raw milk and spinach from states near the damaged reactors.

In 1986, the Chernobyl meltdown in the Ukrainian SSR (now the Ukraine) devastated and displaced large populations, and is linked to widespread and severe birth defects throughout the region.

Government agencies in Japan, however, continue to downplay the immediate dangers to human health, as do officials in the United States; people fear that radiation will reach the West Coast, which it has.
